Summary
Mark Twain wrote about a man who went to a place called “the
Stanislau” in The Californian Tale. There had been a lot of people there before because they found gold a lot but they had already gone. A man met an old man named Henry, who was waiting for his wife, and he stayed with Henry for a few days because his wife would come back soon. While Henry was waiting for her, the man met two people, Tom and Joe. They were friends of the old man. He showed them a letter from his wife. It made his friends cry. All of the old men missed her. They held s small party to welcome her. However, she never got back because she had already died. The friends said to the man, “Henry lost his mind. He thinks she is still alive. When June comes, he thinks she has gone on her trip to see her parents.” Because of that, they came to stay with Henry once a year. They let him to drink something which contained a sleeping drug at the party. After Henry got up, he started waiting for his wife for another year. The author described a kind of love and kindness. Henry loved his wife deeply and his friends knew that, so they did these things to Henry.

In sum, Mark Twain wrote of Henry’s strong love because he didn’t understand his wife was dead. He was waiting for her for a long time. He also mentions Henry’s friends behavior to Henry. I agree with them because if they had let him know the truth, it would have made him sorrowful again. Occasionally there are some things that it is better not to know. In conclusion, it is just a tale, but we can imagine their feelings and feel sympathy, so I recommend this story.
Oh that’s a sad story. Your summary was really clear that I could understand the main points of the story. That’s a good example of strong love. I do agree with you that they are some things we better not to know about, but in the end I think we should know about the main things. As an illustration, we can see that Henry did not understand that his wife died and he thought that she will come back; therefore, he never stop waiting for her, so that is so sad. I think they better tell him the truth, so he can enjoy his life. I do understand that this will be painful for him to know the truth about his wife, but I think this will be for a short time and then he will start adapting this.In my view, letting him waiting for something that will never happen is so sad. I can understand this whole story clearly by reading your summary. I kink of agree with you. Actually, I don't know what's good way for Henry. If he knows his wife's death, he'll go into deep depression. But, he will wait her forever, if he doesn't realize his wife's death. I think both case are sad. I'm so sad because the author also lived sad life like Henry. Because of his wife and two daughters death, he suffered mental depression.If you have interest, you can go to the link :^)

I got so sad after reading this story, it`s really painful. If I lost my valuable person, I am not sure I can accept that. But I think the old man have to accept the death of his wife and live for new life. The friends are really considerate of him and their behavior is really kind. I agree with your idea that occasionally there are some things that it is better not to know. I want to love deeply like the old man someday. And I recommend you one movie from Korea, “Love story”.
